New Zealand snowboarder Tiarn Collins has claimed a second career World Cup victory after triumphing in the Czech Republic on Sunday morning (NZ time).
The 22-year-old from Queenstown took out the latest round of the FIS Snowboard Slopestyle World Cup to catapult to top spot on the leaderboard with one event remaining in the season.
Collins, who last month finished 18th at the Winter Olympics, qualified through to the 16-man final second in his heat on a course in Spindleruv Mlyn which was a little different to that usually seen on the World Cup circuit. It had just one rail feature at the top of the course and a second rail feature inserted halfway down between jumps.
Sitting sixth dropping into his second and final run after opening with a score of 76.00, Collins laced together a technical display that he executed to near perfection, to the delight of the crowd cheering on from the bottom.
“I’m so stoked, I wasn’t expecting that or anything, I just wanted to put down a good run,” Collins said soon after his triumph.
“I wasn’t even going for the win straight away, I just wanted to put something down, and then I just had a go and it worked out. So I’m hyped.”
Sweden’s William Mathisen and Luke Winkelmann of the United States rounded out the podium, in second and third, respectively.
The final event of the World Cup season is in Silvaplana, Switzerland, next weekend.
