Saturday, 29 January 2022 – Detectives based in Busia’s Butula sub-county are in pursuit of a gang that was captured on CCTV breaking into a car at Western Ambiance Hotel in Bumula, stealing Sh2.14 million.
In the 3 pm incident yesterday, the 47-year-old victim had withdrawn the hefty sum of cash from a bank located in Busia town, stashed it in a bag which he placed in the trunk of his Toyota Premio before starting a journey towards Kisumu.
He made a brief stop at Western Ambiance Hotel to calm hunger pangs, after which he continued with his journey.
Shortly after take-off, he was taken aback after realizing a second bag that was in the rear seat of his car containing his clothes and more cash amounting to Sh 144,000 was missing.
Amidst hope and supplication that the worst had not happened, he pulled over and went for the larger sum in the trunk, only to find the bag gone.
He hastily returned to the hotel where he had enjoyed a meal a moment prior and enquired for CCTV footage.
The footage had captured occupants of an unestablished car make registration number KCM 948U using a key to gain ingress into the victim’s car, before walking back to their vehicle carrying two bags and driving off.
On receiving the report, detectives processed the scene and commenced the hunt for the criminals.
They, however, lost trail of the hoodlums after the registration plates earlier used on the suspicious vehicle were found dumped at a roadside.
Other forensic leads are however being employed to hunt down the perpetrators, as detectives probe further to establish the reason behind carrying the huge sum for the long-distance, which could have as well been transacted through other means or withdrawn at Kisumu branches.
