The build-up to the prestigious 2025 L’Ormarins King’s Plate has been marked by unexpected drama.
Three separate incidents at the Vaal on New Year’s Eve left some of South Africa’s top jockeys sidelined, reshuffling the line-up for this iconic race.
Jockey Injuries Shake Things Up
The first unfortunate incident involved Calvin Habib, who lost his opportunity to ride Betway Summer Cup champion Atticus Finch.
His horse, Paisley Park, stumbled and dislodged him after the third race.
Habib sustained a fractured clavicle and is set to undergo surgery, ruling him out for approximately six weeks.
Stepping into the spotlight, Raymond Danielson will now ride Atticus Finch in his place.
Another mishap occurred in the fifth race when Mary Read stumbled, throwing jockey Piere Strydom.
He was rushed to the medical center and later to the hospital for further observation. Unfortunately, this incident means Strydom will not be riding See It Again, the race’s runner-up last year.
Rumors suggest rising star Rachel Venniker might take over, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
The final incident involved Craig Zackey, who was dislodged by Elembee.
Thankfully, Zackey is expected to recover in time to fulfill his engagement with Gimme A Prince, one of the favorites for this weekend’s race.
Countdown to the Big Race
South Africa’s oldest horse race, dating back to 1861, is set to run on Saturday, January 4, at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
A total of 13 horses will compete over 1,600 meters in the Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate.
This year’s lineup boasts an exciting mix of talent, including the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas champion One Stripe, Betway Summer Cup star Atticus Finch, and past winner Al Muthana.
Unfortunately, reigning champion Charles Dickens has retired to stud, leaving last year’s runner-up See It Again as a major contender.
Top Cape trainer Justin Snaith has entered three strong horses, further heating up the competition.
Record-Breaking Prize Money
For the 164th renewal of this legendary race, prize money has reached new heights, with a record fund of R3 million.
The winner will take home R1.78 million, while second and third place earn R570,000 and R285,000, respectively.
The race is scheduled as the seventh event on a nine-race card, with the starting gates opening at 16:10.
Spotlight on the Cartier Paddock Stakes
Adding to the excitement, the R1 million Grade 1 Cartier Paddock Stakes will take place earlier in the day.
This prestigious race, dedicated to fillies and mares, has long been a cornerstone of South Africa’s breeding excellence.
With a starting time of 15:35, it promises thrilling action.
