Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan Markle, is setting his sights on a fresh start in 2025.
At 80 years old, he’s leaving behind his cliffside home in Rosarito, Mexico, where he has lived for the past decade.
The Emmy-winning former lighting director has faced serious health challenges, including two heart attacks and a stroke.
Now, he seeks a peaceful life among “kinder people” in a new location, possibly in Southeast Asia.
Packing Up Memories and Letting Go
Amidst the preparations for his move, Mr. Markle spent time sorting through decades of cherished belongings.
Over cups of tea and mince pies, he sifted through old photographs and keepsakes.
Among them were Meghan’s school reports, which described her as a bright and engaged student, and snapshots of happy family moments—fishing trips, golf games, and shared laughter.
Carefully packing each item, he reflected on the bittersweet memories of raising his daughter, whom he affectionately called “Megsy.”
He saved every photo and letter, tucking them into boxes for his journey to a new chapter.
Despite their estrangement, Mr. Markle’s love for Meghan remains unwavering, saying, “My door is always open to her.”
A Journey Toward Peace
Mr. Markle’s decision to leave Rosarito is not about fleeing his past but embracing a quieter, more fulfilling future.
He fondly recalls his travels in Southeast Asia as a younger man and is drawn to the region’s culture, kindness, and respect for elders.
“At 80, it’s time to find a place where I can enjoy the time I have left in peace,” he shared.
Although he has never met his son-in-law, Prince Harry, or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, Mr. Markle holds onto hope for reconciliation.
Yet, he has accepted the likelihood that such a reunion may never happen.
Reflections on a Complicated Relationship
Despite the physical distance and emotional rift, Mr. Markle still treasures the time he spent raising Meghan.
He reminisced about helping her with school plays, lighting stages for her performances, and supporting her early acting career.
The headshots he took and the memories of her calligraphy on birthday and Christmas cards remain vivid reminders of their bond.
However, he remains baffled by the breakdown in their relationship, particularly Meghan’s belief that he intentionally missed her 2018 wedding.
Showing medical records from the time, he explained that he was hospitalized with heart issues and could not travel.
Watching the wedding from an Airbnb instead of walking his daughter down the aisle was a painful moment he carries with him.
Moving On Without Bitterness
Mr. Markle has no plans to return to the United States, citing disappointment with its current politics.
Instead, he’s embracing the idea of a simpler, more positive life abroad.
“I’m not running away,” he explained.
“I just want a more peaceful existence, free from the drama of recent years.”
As he closed the door on his home for the last time, Mr. Markle expressed gratitude to the people of the UK for their kindness and support.
He dreams of one day reuniting his family, but for now, his focus is on finding tranquility in his remaining years.
A New Year, A New Beginning
As Thomas Markle embarks on this fresh chapter, he does so with hope in his heart.
“It’s a new year and time for a fresh start,” he said with quiet determination.
Bon voyage, Mr. Markle—may you find the peace you’ve been searching for.
