The Super Eagles encountered a setback as they suffered a 2-0 defeat in a preparatory friendly match against Guinea ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

Nigeria’s Defeat in Pre-AFCON Friendly Against Guinea

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, encountered a setback in their preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), suffering a 2-0 defeat against Guinea in a friendly match.

The encounter took place at the Bani Yas Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Early Setback for Nigeria

The three-time African champions faced an early setback as Guinea secured the lead in the 14th minute of the game, putting Nigeria on the defensive.

This unexpected turn of events posed a challenge for the Super Eagles in their quest for victory.

Missed Opportunities and Penalty Drama

Despite the early setback, Nigeria had multiple opportunities to level the score.

Notably, a penalty was awarded to Sadiq Umar in the 19th minute.

However, their hopes were dashed as the Guinean goalkeeper denied Moses Simon from the spot, maintaining Guinea’s lead and complicating Nigeria’s efforts to turn the tide.

Struggles in the Second Half

The second half proved to be challenging for Nigeria as they struggled to find their rhythm, ultimately conceding a second goal in the 64th minute.

The team faced an uphill battle to recover, requiring strategic changes to their lineup.

Late Changes and Unsuccessful Comeback Attempts

In an effort to turn the tide, coach Jose Peseiro made several late changes in the 73rd minute, substituting Omeruo, Onyedika, and Awaziem for Bassey, Iwobi, and Onyeka, respectively.

However, despite additional substitutions with Aribo, Musa, and Lookman entering the game ten minutes later, replacing Alhassan, Chukwueze, and Simon, Guinea maintained a clean sheet.

The alterations came too late to effect any major upset, and the Super Eagles concluded the match with a 2-0 defeat, highlighting areas for improvement before the upcoming AFCON tournament.
