…By Alan Peterson for TDPel Media. A concerning incident occurred when a teenager collapsed near the school gates after trying vaping for the first time.
Headteacher Glyn Potts has since issued a warning about the potential dangers of vaping on the health of young individuals.
The student, fortunately, made a full recovery, but Mr. Potts emphasized the need for awareness regarding the contents of vapes.
He expressed his concerns, stating, “We don’t know what is going in the vapes themselves, and a number of them are repurposed.”
Some vapes have been found to contain unknown chemicals and toxins, which was the case with the collapsed student at their school.
Growing Incidents and the Need for Advice
Mr. Potts revealed that several schools have experienced similar incidents as the number of vapes repurposed for illicit purposes continues to rise.
He stressed the importance of providing young people with advice and information about the potential dangers associated with such devices.
Even nicotine vapes, which may appear innocuous, contain 12 times the amount of nicotine found in a cigarette, posing significant risks for young bodies to handle.
Witnessing their friends become ill after vaping can be shocking and worrisome for classmates, as the incident leaves a lasting impact.
Misconceptions and the Illusion of Safety
The headteacher cautioned parents about the misconception that vaping is a safer alternative to smoking for young individuals.
He highlighted the misconception by saying, “But we’re actually creating nicotine-addicted young people, which is then leading to other challenges and other illnesses.”
Flavors like cherry blossom may make vaping more appealing, but the dangers remain the same.
Mr. Potts emphasized that vaping should not be seen as a safe option, as the long-term impact of vaping on health is still largely unknown.
The Need for Information and Awareness
Drawing parallels to the early days of smoking, Mr. Potts explained how vaping is sometimes perceived as harmless.
He stressed the importance of obtaining comprehensive information on the impact of vaping, as it is not a safe choice for young people.
The headteacher called for awareness among parents and the wider community, as vaping can lead to nicotine addiction and subsequent health challenges.
Contrary to popular belief, vaping carries risks that should not be overlooked.
Legalities and Age Restrictions
In the UK, vapes can be legally sold to individuals over the age of 18.
However, this incident highlights the importance of understanding the potential risks associated with vaping, particularly for young people.
