Teenage boy appears in court charged with murder of nine-year-old girl in Weston-super-Mare following stabbing at her home

A tragic incident has left the Weston-super-Mare community reeling after nine-year-old Aria Thorpe was fatally stabbed at her home.

Aria, who had celebrated her birthday just two weeks ago with a K-pop-themed “Demon Hunters” party, was discovered dead at a property on Lime Close shortly after 6pm on Monday.

Teenage Boy Charged and Appears in Court

A 15-year-old boy, arrested outside Worle rail station less than half a mile from the scene, has been formally charged with Aria’s murder.

Due to his age, his identity cannot be released.

He appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today, dressed in a grey jumper and tracksuit bottoms, and spoke only to confirm his name, address, and date of birth.

The district judge, Nicholas Wattam, remanded him into youth detention accommodation ahead of a Crown Court hearing scheduled for Friday.

“This case has to go to the Crown Court for trial,” Judge Wattam said, adding that the hearing took place in a closed courtroom with only family and authorized personnel present.

Community Mourns and Tributes Pour In

In the wake of Aria’s death, a growing shrine has appeared outside her home.

Friends, family, and local residents have laid flowers, toys, and heartfelt messages.

Tributes describe Aria as a “sweet, beautiful” girl whose loss is felt deeply by everyone who knew her.

Messages left at the scene reflect the profound sadness:

  • “Aria, sleep tight beautiful girl. In our heart you will stay forever. Love you all your family.”

  • “I’m going to miss you lots. Thank you for being my friend. I’ve brought you this stitch and I have one as well.”

  • Reception class students at Becket School wrote: “RIP little lady. Taken well too soon. Fly high. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time.”

Police Confirm Progress in Investigation

Superintendent Jen Appleford said that the investigation has been moving quickly since Monday evening.

“We can confirm a 15-year-old boy, who lives in Weston-super-Mare, has overnight been charged with murder.

He is due to appear in court later today,” she said.

Appleford emphasized the impact on Aria’s family, stating that the past 36 hours have been “incredibly traumatic” and urging the public to respect their privacy.

Community Support and Resources

The tragic loss has left a deep mark on the local community, and support efforts are underway.

Police are working with local agencies and schools to ensure anyone affected receives the help they need.

Residents have been thanked for their patience while enquiries continue in the area.

Superintendent Appleford reassured the public: “This work will need to continue over the next few days, but if anyone has any issues then please do not hesitate to speak to officers on the cordon who will be happy to help.”

What Happens Next

The 15-year-old defendant will appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, where the case will move forward.

In the meantime, the community continues to mourn, and authorities remain committed to keeping the investigation thorough while supporting those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
