Swedish Royal Family Gathers for Joyous Council Meeting as King Carl Gustaf Officially Announces Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip’s Newborn Daughter’s Name in Stockholm

The Swedish royal family had plenty to smile about as they gathered for a special Council of State meeting.

The reason? A heartwarming announcement about the newest addition to the family!

Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip Welcome a Baby Girl

Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip became proud parents once again, welcoming their fourth child into the world on Friday.

The couple was seen leaving the hospital over the weekend, beaming with joy as they introduced their newborn to the world.

The Official Name Announcement

During the Council of State meeting, King Carl Gustaf officially informed the Government of the baby’s name: Ines Marie Lilian Silvia.

The little princess, who is now eighth in line to the Swedish throne, will be known as Princess Ines.

Along with her name, she was also granted the Duchy of Västerbotten.

However, due to a decision made by the King in 2019, Princess Ines will not hold the title of ‘Her Royal Highness’ and will not be part of the official Royal House, though she remains a cherished member of the royal family.

A Name with Meaning

The name ‘Ines’ has roots in several languages and carries significant meanings, including ‘pure,’ ‘chaste,’ and ‘holy.’ A beautiful choice for the royal couple’s first daughter!

Family Celebrates Together

Prince Carl Philip, 45, proudly attended the event alongside his three sons—Prince Alexander, 8, Prince Gabriel, 7, and Prince Julian, 3—who all looked dapper in suits.

Meanwhile, Crown Princess Victoria, 47, shined in a silvery blue floral-embroidered dress as she sat beside her father, King Carl Gustaf, 78.

Queen Silvia, 81, also made an elegant appearance, dressed in a white skirt and coat paired with a polka dot top.

The celebration was truly a family affair, with Sofia’s sisters, Lina and Sara Hellqvist, also attending, as well as Princess Madeleine and her husband, Chris O’Neill.

A Stylish Departure from the Hospital

As Princess Sofia left the hospital, she looked effortlessly radiant, dressed warmly for Sweden’s chilly weather.

She opted for dark flared trousers, a cream high-neck sweater, and a matching cream jacket.

Keeping it casual, she completed her look with a baseball cap and dark-soled boots.

Prince Carl Philip matched his wife’s laid-back style, sporting green slacks, blue trainers, a navy winter coat, and a green baseball cap.

The Exciting Pregnancy Announcement

The royal couple first shared the happy news of their pregnancy last September.

At the time, the Swedish Royal Household released a statement confirming that Princess Sofia was expecting their fourth child and was in good health.

The baby was due in February 2025, and no changes were anticipated in Sofia’s royal duties during the autumn.

Alongside the announcement, the couple posted a stunning photo featuring a picturesque lake and mountains in the background.

In the image, Carl Philip smiled warmly at the camera while Sofia leaned her head against him—a touching moment that delighted royal fans.

A New Royal Without an HRH Title

While Princess Ines is eighth in line to the throne, she will not hold the HRH title due to a decision made by King Carl XVI Gustaf in 2019.

In a Christmas speech that year, the King explained that stripping his grandchildren of certain royal titles would help them ‘carve out their own future’ without the constraints of royal duties.

‘It was a decision to clarify who within the royal family will act as official representatives of Sweden in the future,’ he explained.

‘This will hopefully be helpful when my grandchildren eventually forge their own paths.’

Sweden’s Royal Family Expands

With the birth of Princess Ines, King Carl and Queen Silvia now have nine grandchildren—a growing legacy for the Swedish monarchy.

Following the birth, the official Swedish royal family Instagram account shared the joyful news, prompting an outpouring of congratulations from royal fans worldwide.

So, what’s next for the Swedish royals? For now, they’re simply enjoying this precious moment as they welcome their newest family member!
