Co-coach of Mamelodi Sundowns Rhulani Mokwena praised the impact of his team’s new additions following Sunday’s victory over SuperSport United.
Sundowns advanced to the next round of the MTN8 quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Matsatsantsa at the TUKS Stadium.
At halftime, the score was 0-0, with Bafana Ba Style having the majority of possession but failing to create many scoring opportunities.
Both Marcelo Allende and Abubeker Nasir scored their second goals for Sundowns shortly after being introduced by the team’s technical staff early in the second half.
RHULANI MOKWENA LAUDS SUNDOWNS’ NEW SIGNING
“The advice at halftime was to be calm; we knew they would continue to play with five [at the back], but where our full-backs move determines the formation,” Mokwena told SuperSport.
“If you go a bit higher, you enable [Onismor] Bhasera to be the fifth defender, but if you go a bit shallower, Thapelo or Mudau, then the movement from Thapelo Morena to see for the first goal, you pull him short and seek for the space behind.
“But it was a strong effort, with good energy and dedication from our players. It was not an easy game, but it was a good one.”
“Congratulations to our substitutes, Marcelo Allende, Nasir, Mothobi Mvala, and Sipho Mbule.”
“Sipho Mbule assisted us in gaining more control. Congratulations on your well-deserved success, Mamelodi Sundowns.”
