Salmaan Moerat, the 26-year-old Stormers lock who captained the Springboks against Portugal last year, is in high demand.
With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, the player has become a target for several top clubs.
Reports indicate that both Bayonne and Sale Sharks are keen to secure his signature, hoping to bring him to Europe.
Stormers Push for Extension
However, things aren’t as simple as they may seem.
The Stormers are reportedly preparing a new contract to keep Moerat in Cape Town, which adds a layer of complexity to the situation.
With three potential options—remaining with the Stormers, heading to Bayonne, or making the move to Sale—Moerat has some tough decisions ahead.
While it’s reasonable to think that the Paarl-born lock might prefer to stay in South Africa, only time will tell which direction he’ll choose.
Controversy Surrounding SA Rugby’s Equity Deal
In other news, tensions are rising within the world of South African rugby.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has criticized SA Rugby’s handling of the ongoing equity deal negotiations, calling for an end to the conflict.
“I think the time has come for us to move on,” McKenzie said.
“SA Rugby needs to find alternative revenue sources and stop the fighting.
It’s causing unnecessary division and strife.”
A New Proposal on the Table
McKenzie also mentioned a new proposal from the Rupert group, which he believes could be a better option than the current ASG proposal.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of SA Rugby and suggested that alternative solutions should be seriously considered.
According to McKenzie, he has personally seen the Rupert group’s proposal and believes it has the potential to resolve some of the current issues.
He also pointed out the lack of communication between rugby unions, urging all parties to come together and collaborate for the good of the sport.
