Chrysostom explained that when Thomas touched Christ’s wounds and was restored to faith, it affirmed the spirit of believers, eliminating all doubts.
St. John Chrysostom highlighted that Christ, in his mercy to save Thomas’ soul, appeared before him and displayed his wounds.
Interestingly, this appearance didn’t happen immediately but eight days later, intensifying Thomas’ desire and solidifying his faith thereafter.
The Significance of Christ’s Wounds
Chrysostom emphasized the significance of Christ’s incorruptible body bearing the marks of the nails from his crucifixion.
This visual proof served to affirm that it was indeed the same body that had undergone crucifixion, now resurrected.
St. Augustine’s Interpretation
St. Augustine, another esteemed doctor of the Church, reflected in one of his sermons that Christ specifically responded to Thomas’ challenge not only for him but also for those who might doubt the reality of Christ’s true flesh.
In essence, both Chrysostom and Augustine’s interpretations underscore the profound spiritual lessons drawn from Thomas’ doubt and subsequent faith, illustrating Christ’s compassion and the enduring significance of his resurrection.
