Special criteria from DoH to provide smoking cessation services in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 13th October, 2021 – The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre organised a virtual training programme on “Special criteria from the Department of Health for providing smoking cessation services in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi” to increase the number of healthcare providers who adhere to the best approved international standards with Abu Dhabi Department of Health standards for these services.

The programme addressed several facts, the most important being the possibility of increasing smoking cessation services in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, where the limited number of clinics is considered a significant obstacle to its applicants.

The provision of such services in hospitals may provide an opportunity for service providers to help smokers quit smoking.

The cases of smoking-related diseases are an opportunity to encourage patients to seek these services.

In addition, providing such services as a stand-alone facility ensures the quality and safety requirements of management and care for individuals registered for this service.

Dr.

Bodour Al Shehhi, Head of Chronic Diseases Department, Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, said, “There are currently only 14 licenced and operational clinics that provide smoking cessation services in Abu Dhabi.

The current situation calls for the urgent need to provide these services to its applicants and integrate them as tasks performed by healthcare providers while receiving patients in healthcare facilities.

Awareness is an essential element that clarifies some of the ideas that a smoker may have, such as switching from smoking regular tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, believing that it is healthier.

They need to know that according to recent studies, the dual use of electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes is one of the risk factors behind the increased risk of infection with the coronavirus and other chronic diseases.

Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre contributes significantly to achieve the global goal of reducing tobacco use.

It provides appropriate support to increase the chances of quitting smoking, for example, by following a set of mechanisms to provide counselling to individuals and groups.

These are toll-free phone services to provide personal support to eliminate the scourge of smoking and expand the service to reach adolescent smokers and pregnant women, in addition to the use of social media to raise public awareness at all levels.
