Sowore Raises Alarm Over Seun Kuti’s Secret Trial, Accuses Nigerian Police of Revenge

The passage highlights the accusations made by Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), against the Nigerian police regarding a secret trial involving Seun Kuti.

Sowore, a human rights activist, took to Twitter to allege that the police took Kuti before Chief Magistrate Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun without informing his lawyers.

According to Sowore, the magistrate granted the police’s request to extend the investigation time by four days.

He claims that this action was taken to prevent Kuti from resuming his #GETTHESAX Summer Tour, which was scheduled to start on May 20, 2023, in Calvia, Spain.

Sowore suggests that the motive behind the secret trial is not justice but revenge.

In another development, Kuti’s lawyer, Olumide Adeyinka-Fusika (SAN), stated that he was unaware of the seizure of his client’s gun license by the police.

He clarified that the seizure of the license is unrelated to the allegation of assaulting a police officer. Kuti had turned himself in for investigation after allegedly attacking a police officer who reportedly threatened him and his family members.

The musician was subsequently detained, and a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court granted an order for him to remain in police custody for 48 hours before his bail would take effect.

However, there are reports that the police seized Kuti’s gun license during a search of his house in Ikeja.

Adeyinka-Fusika expressed his lack of awareness regarding the seizure, stating that a gun license is merely a piece of paper authorizing the possession of a specified firearm.

He questioned the connection between the allegation of slapping a policeman and the seizure of the gun license.

The lawyer did not provide any information about Kuti’s bail as his detention period of 48 hours was set to end on the day of reporting.

As of the time of the report, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer did not respond to inquiries regarding the issue.

This raises questions about the current status of the gun license and the subsequent actions taken by the police.

Overall, the passage highlights the allegations made by Sowore and the response from Kuti’s lawyer regarding the secret trial and the seizure of the gun license.
