Southampton finalizes Johannes Spors as technical director after resolving work permit delays in England

After weeks of uncertainty, Southampton has officially named Johannes Spors as their new technical director.

The appointment had hit a roadblock due to work permit issues, but with those now resolved, Spors is set to take on his new role starting February 15.

Mail Sport had previously reported on January 16 that Spors was the frontrunner for the position, and now the club has made it official.

He steps into the role previously held by Jason Wilcox, who departed for Manchester United in April 2024.

A Wealth of European Football Experience

At 42 years old, Spors brings an impressive résumé, having worked in key footballing roles at RB Leipzig, Vitesse Arnhem, and Genoa.

His expertise earned him a promotion to Global Sporting Director at the 777 Group, a position that further solidified his reputation in European football.

Now, as Southampton’s technical director, he will play a crucial role in shaping the club’s footballing strategy, working closely with the owners, Sport Republic.

His responsibilities include overseeing recruitment, player development, and long-term planning to ensure the club remains competitive.

Excitement for the Challenge Ahead

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Spors shared his excitement about working with Southampton, a club known for its strong history and commitment to player development.

“I’m excited to finally start work at Southampton,” Spors said.

“Saints have a great history and a real dedication to developing players, not just in the Academy but also at the first-team level.

I look forward to working with the team at Staplewood to build a strategy that helps bring success on the pitch.”

A New Era Under Phil Parsons’ Leadership

Spors will report directly to Southampton’s CEO, Phil Parsons, and will work closely with Director of Football Operations Mark Bitcon.

His appointment signals a new phase for the club as they aim to refine their footballing strategy and push for future success.

With his extensive experience and strong background in player development, Southampton fans will be hoping that Spors can help steer the club towards a promising future.

Now that the visa hurdles are out of the way, all eyes will be on him as he takes charge of football operations at St. Mary’s.
