This Thursday, September 19, Durban will host a significant event as it prepares to hold the funeral service for the esteemed former Minister, Pravin Gordhan.
The ceremony will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.
A Life Remembered
Pravin Gordhan, who was 75 years old, passed away last Friday after battling illness.
In recognition of his extensive contributions and dedication, President Cyril Ramaphosa has designated the service as a Special Official Funeral Category 2.
This will include ceremonial honors performed by the South African Police Service.
Following the public service, the funeral will proceed with a private cremation, as stated by the Presidency.
A Legacy of Public Service
Gordhan’s career in public service was marked by his long tenure in various key roles.
He was a Cabinet member for many years before announcing his planned retirement earlier this year.
His positions included:
- Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2014, and again from 2015 to 2017.
- Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2014 to 2015.
- Minister of Public Enterprises from February 2018 until his retirement in March 2024.
Additionally, Gordhan was the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service in 1999, following his role as Deputy Commissioner.
A Request from the Family
In lieu of floral tributes, Gordhan’s family has asked mourners to consider making donations to charities of their choice or to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
The funeral service is set to begin at 10:00 AM.
