Sibusiso Hlubi Opens Up About Mental Struggles After Relegation Experiences in South African Football

Former Polokwane City FC winger Sibusiso Hlubi reflects on the mental toll of consecutive relegations and his journey back into football.

Sibusiso Hlubi, now with SAFA ABC Motsepe League’s NC Professionals, faced significant career setbacks after his PSL stint ended with Sekhukhune United in 2022.

His earlier career included playing for Maritzburg United, Polokwane City, and the now-defunct Free State Stars.

Relegation with Free State Stars in 2019 followed by another with Polokwane City the next season deeply affected Hlubi’s confidence and prospects in football.

Speaking to FARPost, he reveals how these challenges made it difficult for him to secure a team, yet he found ways to grow from adversity.

“It made me stronger because I knew that there is no one that wants to sign a relegated player,” Hlubi explains.

Despite the setbacks, he saw an opportunity to prove himself and elevate his game.
