After a challenging start to his season at Kaizer Chiefs, midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa has finally cemented his place in the team under head coach Nasreddine Nabi.
His perseverance and dedication have turned his fortunes around, earning him a regular spot in the starting eleven.
From the Bench to Consistency
The 30-year-old midfielder struggled to make an impact earlier in the season, spending much of his time on the bench.
Before November, Mthethwa had made only one league appearance.
However, in recent weeks, he has featured in eight consecutive starting line-ups, signaling a significant shift in Nabi’s confidence in the KwaZulu-Natal-born player.
This consistent run of games has seen Mthethwa showcase his talents as a box-to-box playmaker.
Mthethwa on His Journey
Reflecting on his resurgence, Mthethwa expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he’s been given.
“I think what’s helping me thrive under the new coach is my ability to follow instructions and adapt quickly,” he said.
“The coach is very clear about how he wants us to play, and it’s up to us to take those instructions seriously.”
He emphasized the importance of staying focused even when not playing regularly.
“Even when you’re not in the starting line-up, you can’t let it discourage you.
The key is to keep listening to the coach and preparing yourself for when your chance comes.”
Grabbing Opportunities
Mthethwa also shared his excitement about joining AmaKhosi and the challenges that came with it.
“It was a big moment for me and those around me when I joined Kaizer Chiefs.
But growth comes with challenges.
I wasn’t playing much initially, and that was tough.
However, I stayed focused on my training, knowing I had to be ready to seize any opportunity with both hands.”
The midfielder, known for his tenacity, added, “I see myself as a Pitbull on the field.
My job is to make sure nothing gets past me, and I take that responsibility seriously.”
Does Mthethwa Add Value to Kaizer Chiefs?
Mthethwa’s determination and recent performances have undoubtedly strengthened the Kaizer Chiefs midfield.
His energy and commitment are hard to miss, but what do you think?
