Sandberg, one of the most powerful women in tech and the top lieutenant to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, made the decision to leave Meta over the weekend after having worked at the company for 14 years.
Sandberg has a long history of lobbying work. She is the co-founder and board chair of the Lean In Foundation, a global organization dedicated to fostering women’s leadership, growth, and inclusiveness at work.
Despite Meta’s Respectful Communication Policy prohibiting employees from discussing abortion, she took to her public Facebook page last month to protest the leaked Supreme Court draft judgment suggesting the court had voted to knock down Roe v Wade.
Although there is never a “perfect time” to leave a company, Sandberg told Fortune that she has decided to focus on advocacy work for the time being, saying that her role at Meta allowed little time for outside priorities.
