There’s good news on the horizon for fans of Siya Kolisi and the Sharks, as the Springbok captain might just make it back onto the field in time for the start of the United Rugby Championship.
Financial Support from an Old Ally
According to a report in the Sunday newspaper Rapport, Vincent Mai, a businessman and financier who supported Kolisi during his school years at Grey High, has stepped in to assist the Sharks.
Mai has reportedly agreed to help cover the significant transfer fee required to bring Kolisi back to the Sharks.
A Breakdown in Negotiations
The negotiations for Kolisi’s transfer hit a roadblock after it was revealed that Jacky Lorenzetti, the owner of Racing 92, is demanding the full repayment of the R17 million (€726,200) spent to sign Kolisi earlier in 2023.
The Sharks had offered a payment plan to spread the cost over two to three years, but Lorenzetti is said to have rejected this proposal outright.
A Tense Relationship and Demanding Conditions
Kolisi has only been with Racing 92 for a short time, making 18 appearances in his debut season.
However, his relationship with Lorenzetti has deteriorated.
After Racing’s Top 14 playoff defeat to Bordeaux, Lorenzetti criticized Kolisi, accusing him of being “out of shape and invisible.”
Despite this tension, Lorenzetti is reportedly unwilling to release Kolisi unless the Sharks meet his financial demands in full.
