Two senior soldiers from the highly regarded Queen’s Royal Hussars regiment are now facing scrutiny after appearing at a recent party in Nazi SS uniforms.
The choice of attire, worn just days before Remembrance Sunday, has led to significant backlash.
Guests at the Halloween event, held at their Wiltshire barracks, were stunned by the costumes, which included Nazi salutes captured in photos that soon surfaced on social media.
Following complaints, the sergeants were removed from the party by military police and are now under investigation for their actions.
Regimental Sergeant Major’s Role Raises Questions
What has intensified the situation is that the sergeants reportedly received approval from their Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) to wear these costumes.
The RSM, now suspended amid a formal inquiry, is reportedly fighting to preserve his career as accusations emerge that he may have misled the regiment’s commanding officer regarding his knowledge of the costumes.
Sources indicate that he initially claimed ignorance, a stance that has only added to the controversy.
Lack of Political Intent, but Concerns Over Insensitivity
While there is no indication that either soldier intended to make a political statement, their decision to wear the uniforms so close to Remembrance Sunday has drawn sharp criticism from senior officials.
“They may not have intended to offend, but really, what were they thinking?” questioned one senior source.
The Commanding Officer reportedly reacted furiously upon seeing the photos, declaring such actions unacceptable, especially given the Army’s history and its members who fought against Nazi forces.
Army’s Apology and Emphasis on Values
In response, an Army spokesperson has issued a statement condemning the soldiers’ actions, which are described as displaying a “significant lack of judgment” and violating the Army’s core values.
The Army acknowledged the offense caused, apologizing unreservedly for the lapse in conduct.
This incident echoes a similar controversy involving Prince Harry in 2005, when he wore a Nazi uniform to a private party, sparking widespread criticism.
Possible Consequences for Those Involved
While the two soldiers may avoid severe disciplinary measures due to having received their RSM’s approval, their actions have raised difficult questions about accountability and judgment.
The RSM’s alleged efforts to deflect responsibility by claiming ignorance could complicate his case as the investigation progresses.
