Kalidou Koulibaly, the veteran defender from Senegal, is optimistic about the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, anticipating it to be the most exceptional edition in the history of the tournament.
As the reigning champions, Koulibaly and his national teammates have arrived in Ivory Coast with the goal of securing their second AFCON title when the competition kicks off on January 13.
Challenging Group Stage:
Senegal finds themselves in Group C, alongside formidable competitors – The Gambia, Guinea, and Cameroon.
Recognized for their prowess, these teams pose a significant challenge in the quest for the title, having demonstrated their competence against diverse opponents.
Despite the tough competition, Senegal, having reached two consecutive AFCON finals in 2019 and 2021, stand out as undeniable contenders for the championship.
Optimistic Prediction from Koulibaly:
Speaking from the team’s base in Yamoussoukro, where most of their Group C matches will be played, Kalidou Koulibaly expressed his belief that the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast will be historic.
Koulibaly stated, “I think that the Ivory Coast edition will be the best in the history of the competition because all the big teams are present and are fully prepared.
It will show the true image of African football, and I think that whoever wins the title in the end will deserve it.”
Senegal’s Tournament Journey:
Senegal embarks on their title defense on January 15 against Gambia, followed by a clash with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon three days later.
The group stage campaign concludes on January 23 with a match against Guinea. Kalidou Koulibaly, serving as the captain, urged the Senegalese fans to offer their unwavering support and prayers as the team aims to defend the title they secured in Cameroon in 2022.
In his plea, Koulibaly stated, “I ask the Senegalese fans to be behind us during the competition and to pray for us in their prayers.
Their support will take us far in the competition, and we will represent them well and give them a big gift in the end.”
The captain’s call emphasizes the importance of the fans’ role in motivating the team’s performance throughout the tournament.
