Senator Sani Musa from Niger State in the North Central zone is reportedly being considered for the position.

Zoning Arrangement Review and Party Sources

Sources within the party suggest that the review in the zoning arrangement of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have been influenced by a recent meeting between President-elect Bola Tinubu and the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Paris, France.

Earlier Zoning Formula and Speculations

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC had previously announced a zoning formula that favored Godswill Akpabio (South South) as Senate President and Tajudeen Abbas (North West) as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly.

Senator Barau Jubrin (North West) was endorsed as the deputy Senate President.

However, there are speculations that the North Central region might be considered for the deputy Senate President position instead of the North West, which was initially chosen by the APC.

This change in speculation is believed to be a result of Tinubu and Kwankwaso’s meeting.

Kwankwaso’s Influence and Plan B

Kwankwaso reportedly advocated for the North Central to be considered for the deputy Senate President position, following concerns raised about the exclusion of the region in the party’s zoning formula.

Additionally, Kwankwaso’s gesture is seen as a way to ensure his smooth access to the president-elect.

According to sources, if the unexpected happens and Hon Tajudeen Abbas from the North West is not selected, a plan B is already in place to nominate a southerner who strongly supports Abbas as the replacement for the Speaker of the House.

This strategy is aimed at maintaining balance and avoiding a situation where two individuals from the same ethnic group lead the National Assembly.

Ensuring Regional and Religious Balance

With the possibility of Yari causing an upset in the Senate, the plan B involves swiftly switching to a southern candidate for the Speaker position.

This approach is seen as a way to achieve regional and religious balance in the leadership of the National Assembly, as having two Muslims from the North in leading positions could pose concerns.
