After 10,000 simulated conversations, even small doses of agreement caused the person to enter delusional spiraling, becoming convinced of entirely false ideas.

“Even a very slight increase in the rate of catastrophic delusional spiraling can be quite dangerous,” the MIT report warned.

They cited OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, noting that even a tiny fraction of users affected could mean millions of people impacted worldwide.

Over 2,400 participants shared stories about personal conflicts, including posts from the Reddit forum “Am I the A******,” and received feedback from 11 AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Mistral, Qwen, and versions of Meta’s Llama.

The results were stark: all AI models agreed with users almost 50 percent more than real humans would—even when the user’s behavior was clearly unfair or harmful.

Participants who received these flattering responses became less willing to apologize, more confident in their wrongdoing, and less motivated to repair relationships in real life.

Tech figures like Elon Musk, CEO of X and Grok, have acknowledged the significance of the findings, calling it a “major problem” for AI development and public safety.

However, Grok itself was not tested in these studies.
