Ahead of Manchester City’s upcoming clash with Liverpool on February 23 at the Etihad Stadium, Brazilian footballer Savinho opened up about the key moments that shaped his career.
One of the most significant influences on his decisions, he says, is his wife, Anna Carolina Barbosa Moreira.
Wife’s Support in Career Choices
In a recent interview, Savinho shared how his wife played a crucial role in his career decisions.
He spoke about how moving to Girona was a life-changing decision, one that eventually led him to Manchester City in 2024.
“My wife helped me a lot with that choice,” Savinho said.
“Girona changed my life completely. It opened the doors to Manchester City for me.
Atlético Mineiro gave me the chance to play at a senior level and sold me to PSV, where I first experienced European football.
But it was Girona that ultimately led me to City.”
Challenges and Lessons Learned in Europe
Savinho also reflected on his time at PSV Eindhoven, describing the experience as both tough and rewarding.
He mentioned the challenges of adapting to cold weather and the language barrier, but emphasized that he doesn’t regret his time there.
“It was difficult, especially the cold weather and the language,” he explained.
“But I’m thankful for the experience at PSV. I made a lot of friends, both Brazilian and Dutch, like Xavi Simons.
I don’t regret going there. It was a crucial step that led to Girona.”
Pursuing a Dream of Playing in Spain
During his time at PSV, Savinho set his sights on Spain.
He shared that before playing in the U-20 World Cup, he told his wife that he wanted to play for a Spanish club.
With his agent’s guidance, he knew the World Cup would be a big opportunity to showcase his talent.
“I told my wife I wanted to play in Spain,” he said. “I was focused on the World Cup because I knew that was where I’d have the chance to prove myself.
I hadn’t played much at PSV that season, so I knew this tournament was my moment.”
Choosing His Number at Manchester City
When it comes to his current role at Manchester City, Savinho revealed the reason behind his decision to wear number 26.
It’s a nod to former City player Riyad Mahrez, whom he admires greatly.
However, Savinho was quick to point out that while he respects Mahrez’s skills, he doesn’t like being compared to him.
“I chose number 26 because of Mahrez,” he explained. “But I don’t like being compared to him.
Mahrez was an incredible player for City, but we both have our own styles.
I’ve always looked up to him, especially for his skill and ability to score goals. He’s a great player, and I respect that.”
Looking Ahead to the Future
As Savinho settles into life at Manchester City, it’s clear that his journey has been one of growth and transformation, from his beginnings at Atlético Mineiro to his time in Europe, and now in the Premier League.
With the support of his wife and his determination to carve out his own path, Savinho is ready to continue making his mark in the world of football.
