Ithala’s Financial Troubles Affect SASSA Beneficiaries
SASSA’s statement on January 28, 2025, revealed that the accounts of recipients at Ithala bank have been frozen.
This action follows Ithala’s placement under provisional liquidation earlier this month.
The freeze impacts over 65,000 beneficiaries who use Ithala for their grant payments.
According to the Prudential Authority of the South African Reserve Bank, the provisional liquidation was applied at the Pietermaritzburg High Court, which directly led to the freezing of these accounts.
Which SASSA Beneficiaries Are Affected by the Delay?
The accounts affected belong to recipients of various types of SASSA grants.
These include individuals receiving Old Age, Covid-19 SRD, Care Dependency, Child Support, Disability, Combination, and Foster Care Grants.
The majority of these beneficiaries are based in KwaZulu-Natal, though a smaller number reside in provinces like Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Free State, North West, and Western Cape.
SASSA Assures Beneficiaries That Payments Will Continue
In the face of these challenges, SASSA has reassured beneficiaries that they are taking action to resolve the issue and will ensure that payments will continue as usual.
The agency has asked that recipients remain calm and patient during this time of uncertainty.
They also reminded beneficiaries that while the situation is being addressed, there is no reason to panic as payments will proceed.
