After months of legal battles, Chelsea star Sam Kerr has finally spoken out following her court victory.

The 31-year-old footballer was cleared of racially aggravated harassment charges on Wednesday, bringing an end to what she describes as a “challenging period” in her life.

The case revolved around an incident in January 2023, when Kerr allegedly called police officer Stephen Lovell “stupid and white” during a heated exchange at Twickenham Police Station.

The situation arose after Kerr and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, believed they were being kidnapped by a taxi driver following a night out in London.

Kerr Defends Her Intentions

In a statement released after the trial, Kerr expressed relief at the not-guilty verdict and reiterated that her words were never meant to cause harm.

“Following today’s not guilty verdict, I can finally put this challenging period behind me,” she said.

“While I apologise for expressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening, I have always maintained that I did not intend to insult or harm anyone, and I am thankful that the jury unanimously agreed.”

She also took the opportunity to thank those who stood by her throughout the ordeal.

“I would like to thank my partner Kristie, my family, friends, and all the fans for their love and support, especially those who attended court each day.”

Eyes Set on Football Return

Beyond the legal battle, Kerr has also been dealing with a major injury.

She has not played for Chelsea or the Australian national team in over a year due to an ACL injury, which has kept her sidelined. However, there is hope for a return soon.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor recently hinted that Kerr could be back in action by February or March, giving fans a reason to be optimistic.

In her statement, Kerr confirmed her determination to return to the pitch.

“I am fully focused on getting back on to the field and look forward to an exciting year ahead for me and my family.”

With the court case behind her and a potential comeback on the horizon, Kerr is now shifting her attention to what she does best—playing football.
