The Salesian Congregation is currently hosting its 29th General Chapter, a crucial event where the next Rector Major will be elected.
This position will succeed Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, who recently stepped down to take up new duties in the Vatican Curia, at the request of Pope Francis.
A Gathering of 227 Salesians from Around the World
The proceedings for the General Chapter began on February 16, 2025, in Turin, Italy, and will continue until April 12.
The event brings together 227 representatives from the more than 14,000 Salesians spread across 136 countries.
This chapter typically happens every six years, but due to the significant changes in leadership, this cycle was shortened by one year.
The Departure of Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime and His Legacy
In September 2023, Cardinal Fernández Artime was appointed as a cardinal, and in April 2024, he was ordained as a bishop.
Consequently, on August 16, 2024, he resigned from his role as the superior of the Salesians.
In his absence, Don Stefano Martoglio, the vicar, assumed temporary leadership of the congregation.
Focus of the General Chapter: Passionate Commitment to Jesus Christ and Young People
This year’s theme for the General Chapter is “Passionate About Jesus Christ, Dedicated to Young People.”
The discussions will center around three major areas: nurturing vocational life, strengthening collaboration between the Salesians and young people, and reorganizing the leadership structure of the congregation.
The elected Rector Major will become the 11th successor to St. John Bosco, and a new General Council will be appointed to lead the congregation forward.
Cardinal Repole Opens the Chapter with Mass in Turin
The opening Mass for the General Chapter was held at the Mary Help of Christians Basilica in Turin, with Cardinal Roberto Repole, Archbishop of Turin, presiding.
In his homily, Cardinal Repole urged the participants to adopt “God’s way of looking at the world” and emphasized the importance of facing challenges in an evangelical manner.
He reminded the congregation to trust in Christ’s strength and presence as they navigate the future of their mission.
