S3 Ventures launches its eighth $250 million fund to back startups in business software and healthcare technology across the United States from Austin

Austin-based venture capital firm S3 Ventures has officially announced the launch of Fund VIII, marking its eighth fund since its founding in 2005.

The new $250 million fund will continue the firm’s mission of backing ambitious startups, particularly in business software and healthcare technology.

A Legacy of Focused Philanthropy

Since day one, S3 Ventures has been supported by a single limited partner: a philanthropic family with a multibillion-dollar foundation committed to improving the lives of children and families.

That backing has allowed the firm to take a long-term approach to investing and to focus on helping founders grow their companies responsibly.

Investment Strategy and Fund Focus

With Fund VIII, S3 Ventures plans to lead Seed, Series A, and Series B rounds, writing initial checks between $500,000 and $15 million, and with the ability to invest over $25 million in a single company over time.

Roughly half the fund will support Texas-based startups, while the rest will be deployed nationwide.

Business software and healthcare technology remain the firm’s primary focus areas.

A Proven Track Record

Led by Founder and Managing Director Brian R. Smith, S3 Ventures has built an impressive portfolio over the past 20 years.

The firm has invested in over 75 startups, which have collectively raised more than $3.5 billion.

Currently, S3 Ventures manages more than 40 active portfolio companies across Texas and 12 other states.

Some notable success stories include Alkami Technology (IPO on NASDAQ: ALKT), Levelset (acquired by Procore), Favor (acquired by HEB), Alleviant, Atmosphere TV, Interplay Learning, Hydrolix, and QbDVision.

The firm has realized over 35 exits, collectively valued at more than $3 billion.

Leadership Moves Alongside Fund VIII

Along with the fund announcement, S3 Ventures has promoted Eric Engineer and Aaron Perman to General Partner, joining Charlie Plauche in the role.

Earlier this year, Joe Curry was promoted to Principal.

These moves strengthen a team that has consistently supported founders and scaled companies across multiple sectors.

Managing Over $1 Billion in Assets

Celebrating its 20th year, S3 Ventures now manages more than $1 billion in assets while maintaining a nationwide portfolio of over 40 active companies.

The launch of Fund VIII positions the firm to continue backing promising entrepreneurs, driving innovation, and building successful businesses well into the future.
