Ronald Koeman has shared his thoughts on Memphis Depay’s future with the Dutch national team, especially after making headlines for his harsh critique of Steven Bergwijn’s recent career move.

Memphis Depay’s New Chapter

Memphis Depay, who recently left Atletico Madrid, has now signed with Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians.

This move comes shortly after fellow Dutch player Steven Bergwijn transferred to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia from Ajax for a substantial €21 million (£17.7 million).

Koeman’s Critique of Bergwijn

Koeman previously expressed his disapproval of Bergwijn’s decision to move to Saudi Arabia, criticizing the winger for lacking ‘sporting ambition’.

He declared that Bergwijn’s international career with the Netherlands is now over.

A Different Outlook for Depay

However, Koeman’s stance on Depay seems to be more lenient.

Despite Depay’s recent switch to the Brazilian league, Koeman believes there’s still a chance for him to be part of the national team.

“The situation with Memphis could be different,” Koeman stated.

“The level of the Brazilian league is not the same as in Saudi Arabia.

As long as Depay stays fit and maintains his form, he could still be a part of the Oranje.”

Depay’s International Record

Depay, who has played for clubs like Lyon, Barcelona, and PSV, made his debut for the Netherlands in 2013.

Over his career, he has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances.

He was also a key player at Euro 2024, starting all six of the Netherlands’ matches and scoring once as the team reached the semi-finals.

Bergwijn’s Response

Koeman’s comments about Bergwijn have stirred up controversy.

Bergwijn has expressed his frustration, saying that Koeman’s public criticism was unfair and unprofessional.

“I don’t even want to play for this manager anymore,” Bergwijn declared.

“He should have spoken to me directly instead of making such statements.”

Upcoming Matches

The Netherlands recently secured a 5-2 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Nations League opener.

They will be back in action on Tuesday, facing Germany in Amsterdam.
