Roblox Signals Willingness to Comply With Russian Laws After Authorities Block the Platform Over Safety Concerns

Roblox has signaled that it is willing to align its operations with Russian laws, following a recent block on the platform in the country.

The announcement came through Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media and internet watchdog, which has been closely monitoring the platform’s compliance with local regulations.

Acknowledging Past Failures

According to the regulator, Roblox admitted that its previous moderation efforts were insufficient.

In particular, the platform had not done enough to safeguard chats and in-game interactions involving minors.

Roskomnadzor pointed out that prior official requests to improve safety and content moderation had largely been ignored.

Authorities Seek Real Action, Not Just Promises

The regulator emphasized that Roblox’s recent statement would be taken seriously only if it is followed by tangible steps.

Measures expected include removing harmful content, preventing criminal activities, and stopping illegal or unsafe communications among users.

“If this is not merely a statement but a genuine readiness to change the platform’s attitude toward ensuring children’s safety on the internet, Roskomnadzor will interact with the platform as it does with any other service that complies with Russian legislation,” the agency said.

Why Roblox Became a Target

Roblox is a global online platform where users can create and play games made by others.

Its enormous virtual ecosystem attracts millions of users, particularly children and young adults aged 9 to 24.

With around 400 million active users worldwide, Russia alone accounted for approximately 6.8 million monthly visits by mid-2025, trailing only the U.S. and Brazil.

The Reasons Behind the Ban

Roskomnadzor blocked Roblox in early December, citing serious safety concerns.

Inappropriate content was reportedly widespread, including virtual spaces that simulated terrorist attacks, gambling, or other illegal scenarios.

Officials were particularly worried about reports of sexual harassment, coercion into violent behavior, and the sharing of intimate images among minors.

Reactions From the Public and Officials

The ban stirred strong reactions, especially among children.

Ekaterina Mizulina, head of the League for Safe Internet, noted that some young users expressed distress, even suggesting they might leave the country.

Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to President Putin, clarified that the appeals received focused on regaining access to the game rather than emigration concerns.

The Road Ahead

The main question now is whether Roblox will follow through on its promises.

Russian authorities have stressed that cooperation will be measured by concrete actions rather than words.

For the platform to regain trust and potentially return to the Russian market, it must demonstrate real commitment to protecting minors and maintaining safe digital spaces.

What to Watch Next

Observers will be keeping an eye on Roblox’s next moves, including updates to content moderation, safety protocols, and interactions with Russian authorities.

The outcome could set an important precedent for how global gaming platforms navigate compliance in countries with strict digital regulations.
