Utility SUVs for House of Representatives Members

Members of the House of Representatives in Nigeria are set to receive utility Prado SUVs, each worth N130 million.

This development was confirmed by the parliament’s spokesman, Rotimi Akin, in a statement issued late on Sunday night in Abuja.

Akin noted that the National Assembly has procured these vehicles and will soon distribute them among the lawmakers.

Compliance with Procurement Laws

According to Akin, this initiative aligns with existing procurement laws and has been customary in previous assemblies.

He clarified that the distribution of the SUVs is linked to lawmakers’ oversight functions in their roles within the standing committees, emphasizing that these vehicles are not personal gifts.

Ownership and Purchase Options

During the 10th assembly, covering the period from 2023 to 2027, the vehicles will remain the property of the National Assembly.

However, Akin mentioned that lawmakers may have the option to purchase the vehicles if the government’s existing asset deboarding policy remains in effect at the end of the assembly’s tenure in 2027.

Enhancing Lawmakers’ Performance

Akin underscored the importance of these vehicles in enhancing the performance of lawmakers’ responsibilities, especially regarding oversight functions that cover various regions of the country.

These SUVs are intended to aid in the efficient implementation of government interventions, programs, and policies, irrespective of the geographic location of Nigerian citizens.

Budget Allocation and Cost Reduction

The statement also drew attention to the diminishing percentage of the legislature’s budget within the national budget.

This allocation has consistently declined over the past decade and currently stands at 0.5% of the federal budget.

Akin urged stakeholders to prioritize cost reduction in appropriate areas while providing support to lawmakers to fulfill their duties effectively and ethically.

Tools for Work and Improved Representation

Akin emphasized that these vehicles serve as tools for work rather than symbols of status.

They are meant to facilitate improved representation, constituency outreach, and oversight functions performed by elected representatives.

The focus is on enhancing lawmakers’ ability to carry out their duties in a productive and responsible manner.
