The House of Representatives has directed its Adhoc Committee investigating the activities of real estate developers, to liaise with all relevant agencies and stakeholders towards the formulation of legislation to regulate the real estate sector.
The resolution was part of the prayers of a motion under matters of urgent national importance on the need for legislation to regulate the sector.
Moving the motion, the Minority Leader Mr.
Ndudi Elumelu expressed concern that some parts of the country has encountered lots of monumental cases of collapsed building as a result of poor quality materials and non-adherence to ethical standard in real estate development.
Paki Dam
Meanwhile in another motion, the House pledged to investigate non completion of the rehabilitation work on Paki Dam in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Presenting the motion, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim Kubau, from Kaduna State explained that the Paki Dam rehabilitation work was awarded in 2003, but later abandoned without any justifiable reason.
Alhaji Ibrahim Kubau maintained that non completion of the rehabilitation work on the dam has greatly affected the implementation of government’s policy of diversifying the economy through agriculture and increasing food security through increased food production in the country.
He said “If fully rehabilitated the Paki Dam will help meet the demand of communities in the area by producing large quantities of farm products like rice, wheat, vegetable, fish farming and provide a wide range of economic and environmental benefits.
“I appeal to the House to intervene by ensuring that the project is retrieved from the contractor since he lacks the capacity to handle the rehabilitation so as to allow the affected communities benefit from the project.
”
Adopting the motion, the House directed its Committee on Water Resources to interface with the ministry of water resources to ensure timely completion of the rehabilitation work on the dam.
