NSFAS CEO Andile Nongogo investigated for alleged corruption and irregularities in the direct payment system

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Board has given its CEO Andile Nongogo seven days to explain why he should not be fired following a scathing report into his alleged involvement in the appointment of service providers for the direct payment system.

The report, which was conducted by Werksmans Attorneys and Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, found that Nongogo had actively participated in the presentation of proposals to the Bid Evaluation Committee (BEC) by service providers.

This is a material violation of the public procurement processes of NSFAS.

The report also found that there was a conflict of interest in the appointment of the four fin-tech service providers that were awarded the tender to handle the direct payment system for NSFAS.

In addition, the report found that Nongogo had appointed Dr Chirwa to assist the BEC as a technical advisor, which is also a violation of the NSFAS public procurement policy.

The NSFAS Board chairperson, Ernest Khosa, said that the findings of the report are very serious and that the board will take appropriate action once Nongogo has had a chance to respond.
