REGULAR HEALTH CHECKS CAN SAVE YOUR KIDNEY – NEPHROLOGIST

Professor Olugbenga Awobusuyi, a Consultant Nephrologist and Head of Nephrology Unit, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has stated that regular health checks can save the kidney from contracting dangerous diseases.

The Nephrologist spoke during an advocacy campaign with the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, members of the hospital management and community leaders as part of activities to mark the Y2022 edition of the World Kidney Day with the theme: “Bridge the Knowledge Gap to Better Kidney Care”,

He described kidney disease as a very common disease that must be detected early to avoid health complications capable of causing death or hampering function of some other organs in the body.

Imploring Nigerians, especially those above the age of 40, to always get themselves screened regularly, check their blood pressure, sugar level and urine all times, Professor Awobusuyi explained that the sensitisation programme was aimed at helping the people in the community understand the important role of the kidneys in the body and how they should be properly checked.

He encouraged Lagosians to take advantage of the free screening organised by LASUTH to ascertain that there are no lurking medical conditions in their bodies and advised everyone to register with the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme in case of future health challenges.  The sensitisation train also visited the popular Alade Market on Allen Avenue in Ikeja to educate the people on the need for regular check-ups to ascertain their health status.

Other activities that heralded the programme included a free health talk, weight and height check, blood pressure check, blood sugar check, as well as kidney function tests.
