Rapist who attacked British waitress near Ayia Napa and used laughing gas loses appeal against eight-year jail term in Cyprus

Upheld Sentence for Assault near Aiya Napa

In a distressing case that occurred in 2019 near Ayia Napa, a Greek court of appeal affirmed an eight-year sentence for a 36-year-old man found guilty of raping a 20-year-old British waitress.

The assailant, known as I.K. in local media, lured the victim to a secluded area, administering cannabis and laughing gas before the assault took place.

Despite his appeal against the sentence, the court upheld the severity of the initial verdict.

Trust Betrayed: Victim’s Terrifying Encounter

The victim, who had recently arrived in Greece, encountered her attacker, whom she recognized as a local worker.

She innocently accepted a ride from him, seeking laughing gas, feeling a sense of trust and security.

However, the situation turned dire as the assailant veered the car towards an unknown location.

Fearful and alarmed, she discreetly messaged her location to a friend, sensing danger in the dark, isolated spot near Sotira.

Trauma and Betrayal Unveiled

What ensued was a horrifying sequence of events.

After consuming substances provided by the perpetrator, the victim’s attempt to leave was met with aggression.

Overwhelmed and terrified, she found herself defenseless against the assailant’s forceful actions.

The aftermath of the assault left her emotionally shattered and traumatized, as observed by her distressed state upon returning to her flat, where her roommate discovered her in disarray and unable to speak.

Denial and Unreliable Claims

Throughout the trial and subsequent appeal, the assailant, I.K., attempted to discredit the proceedings by alleging unfair translation and claiming the victim’s consent.

However, the court dismissed these assertions, highlighting the inconsistencies, contradictions, and falsehoods in his testimony.

The judges vehemently rejected any notion of consent, emphasizing that the victim never displayed any gestures or actions that implied willingness to engage in sexual activity with her attacker.

This harrowing incident not only exposed the brutality of the assault but also revealed the resilience of the victim in seeking justice against her assailant’s unfounded claims.
