President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step in advancing sports development in Nigeria by clearing the outstanding payments owed to the Super Eagles, the senior national football team, and other national sporting teams.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan-Enoh, following a Thanksgiving service in Cross River on Saturday.
Unprecedented Commitment:
Senator Owan-Enoh praised President Tinubu, highlighting that no other Nigerian president has demonstrated the level of commitment displayed in addressing the financial concerns of the national sports teams.
Notably, the senior national team coaches had gone without payment for 15 months, amounting to approximately $1.350 million in salary.
Settlement of Unpaid Allowances:
In addition to the prolonged salary arrears for the senior national team coaches, there were accumulated unpaid allowances and promises for various national teams, including females and the under-20 team, reaching a total of about N12 billion.
Senator Owan-Enoh confirmed that President Tinubu has approved the payment of these outstanding amounts, expressing gratitude for the president’s unwavering support.
Revitalizing the Sports Economy:
Senator Owan-Enoh emphasized President Tinubu’s special interest in reviving the sports sector as a means of bringing joy, peace, and happiness to households across the nation.
The minister lauded the president’s commitment to settling financial issues within the sports arena, recognizing it as a demonstration of effective leadership and support.
Encouragement for National Teams:
Acknowledging the controversial nature of the sports sector, Senator Owan-Enoh encouraged players and managers of the senior national team to redouble their efforts towards achieving victory.
He expressed the nation’s anticipation of success and emphasized the importance of hard work in overcoming challenges within the sports industry.
Navigating Controversies with Determination:
While recognizing the inherent controversies in the sports sector, Senator Owan-Enoh expressed gratitude to God for guiding him through challenges.
He asserted that, despite the controversies, there is a path to triumph, emphasizing the resilience required to navigate the intricacies of the sports economy successfully.
