President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Commitment to Protect Benin Artefacts
In a statement issued by Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, it was revealed that the President has pledged to safeguard the Benin artefacts that have been returned to Nigeria from various parts of the world.
This commitment is seen as a means of preserving the historical significance of these artefacts.
Support for the Establishment of a Museum
During a meeting with the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, and other traditional leaders from Edo State, President Tinubu assured them of his administration’s support for the Benin Royal Council’s efforts to establish a museum dedicated to housing these valuable artefacts.
The President praised the Benin monarch for his role in retrieving the stolen artefacts and emphasized the importance of creating a museum that would adequately showcase the rich history and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
Protection and Preservation
President Tinubu expressed his appreciation for the safe return of the artefacts and assured the traditional leaders that they would be kept under protective custody.
Recognizing their historical significance spanning over a century, the President affirmed his commitment to collaborating on the establishment of the museum to ensure the artefacts are properly preserved and documented for future generations.
Infrastructure Audit and Road Development
President Tinubu also mentioned that the Federal Government is currently conducting an audit of its infrastructure projects.
In response to a request made by the Oba of Benin, the President promised to consider the improvement of roads in Edo State as part of this assessment.
This commitment demonstrates the President’s dedication to addressing the infrastructural needs of the region.
Oba Ewuare II’s Appreciation and Request
Oba Ewuare II expressed his admiration for President Tinubu’s administration, acknowledging the significant progress made within the first few weeks.
The royal father commended the President for renewing the hope of Nigerians and steering the country towards progress and development.
Additionally, he appealed to President Tinubu to assist the Benin Palace in ensuring the returned artefacts are protected from theft or unauthorized seizure, emphasizing the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the Benin Royal House.
Appointment as Pro-Chancellor of NOUN
Oba Ewuare II extended his gratitude to the Federal Government for his appointment as Pro-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
This acknowledgment reflects the respect and recognition given to the Oba for his contributions to education and leadership in Nigeria.
