Premier League Legend Uriah Rennie Passes Away at 65 After Battling Rare Neurological Condition in England

The world of football is mourning the loss of Uriah Rennie, a pioneering figure who made history as the Premier League’s first black referee.

Rennie passed away at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy that goes far beyond the matches he officiated.

A Career Marked by Excellence and Respect

Between 1997 and 2008, Rennie refereed over 300 top-flight Premier League games, earning a reputation for being one of the fittest officials in world football.

His sharp eye, calm demeanor, and fairness earned him respect from players, coaches, and fans alike.

But Rennie wasn’t just known for his on-field work; he was a trailblazer who inspired countless others in the sport.

Battling a Devastating Diagnosis

Last year, Rennie’s life took a heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition that left him paralysed from the waist down.

Doctors told him the condition was inoperable, and he spent months in hospital fighting to regain movement.

“I spent a month laid on my back and another four months sitting in bed,” Rennie shared earlier this year in an interview with the BBC.

“They found a nodule pushing on my spine. It’s a rare neurological condition, so surgery wasn’t an option.”

Despite the grim prognosis, Rennie’s spirit never wavered.

“I’ve had to learn to move all over again,” he said. “I’m retraining my legs.

I can move my feet, and I can stand with a frame attached to my wheelchair, but I still need to work on my glutes.”

A New Chapter: From Hospital Bed to University Chancellor

Even while confined to hospital, Rennie refused to let his diagnosis hold him back.

He continued working remotely, determined to support his community and stay engaged.

He was set to take on a new role as Chancellor at Sheffield Hallam University—a position he was due to start next month after receiving an honorary doctorate.

His dedication and resilience were an inspiration to many, showing that even in the face of life’s toughest challenges, it’s possible to keep pushing forward.

Tributes from the Football Community

The Football Association expressed its condolences, stating, “The FA Refereeing Department is saddened to hear of the passing of former FIFA and Premier League referee, Uriah Rennie.

Uriah will forever be remembered as a true trailblazer of the game.

Our thoughts are with Uriah’s family and friends at this time.”

His impact on the sport, both on and off the pitch, will be remembered for generations.
