In a significant announcement on April 5, 2025, Pope Francis named Bishop John Sherrington as the new Archbishop of Liverpool.

This appointment marks the end of Archbishop Malcolm Patrick McMahon’s tenure, who had been serving the archdiocese since 2014.

Archbishop McMahon submitted his resignation, paving the way for Bishop Sherrington to step into this important role.

Archbishop-Elect Sherrington’s New Role

Bishop Sherrington, who currently serves as the auxiliary bishop of Westminster and has held the title of titular bishop of Hilta since 2011, will take on his new responsibilities with gratitude.

The official installation ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 27, 2025, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King in Liverpool.

This event will mark the beginning of his leadership as the tenth Archbishop of Liverpool.

A Life of Service and Education

Born in Leicester in 1958, Archbishop-elect Sherrington has had an extensive career in both education and pastoral ministry.

With a master’s degree in mathematics from Queen’s College, Cambridge, he initially worked in management consultancy before being ordained a priest for the Diocese of Nottingham in 1987.

He also earned a licentiate in moral theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, further enhancing his theological knowledge.

His service to the Church has included roles as a professor of moral theology at All Hallows College in Dublin and St. John’s Seminary in Wonersh, alongside his parish work in Nottingham and Derby.

Additionally, he has been an active member of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales since 2014, focusing on life issues within the Department for Social Justice.

A Message of Gratitude and Prayer

Following his appointment, Archbishop-elect Sherrington expressed his deep appreciation for Pope Francis’s trust in him.

“I thank Pope Francis for his trust in me on my appointment as Archbishop of Liverpool which I accept with humility and joy,” he said.

He also offered prayers for Pope Francis as he continues his recovery and prepares for Holy Week and Easter.

This new chapter in the life of the archdiocese is filled with anticipation, as Archbishop-elect Sherrington steps into this role of spiritual leadership, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to his faith and community.
