…By Jack Sylva for TDPel Media. President Bola Tinubu has faced accusations of orchestrating an extravagant retirement package for the recently dismissed Service Chiefs, allegedly motivated by a desire to prevent a potential overthrow of his government.
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, leveled these allegations against Tinubu.
Sacrificing National Interests for Consolidation of Power
Sowore claims that Tinubu has disregarded the interests of Nigerians in order to provide the sacked Service Chiefs with enticing benefits, thereby solidifying his position in government.
Last month, President Tinubu swiftly replaced all previous Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Comptroller-General of Customs.
Controversy Surrounding Retirement Benefits
Reports emerged, published by The Punch, revealing that the former Service Chiefs are set to receive opulent retirement benefits, including bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicles, personal aides, guards, and generous allowances for medical treatment abroad.
Among the beneficiaries are General Lucky Irabor, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, Chief of Army Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, Chief of Air Staff.
Sowore’s Reaction and Speculations of Political Intrigue
Reacting to these developments on Twitter, Sowore suggested that the rumors of a plot to overthrow Tinubu’s government during his trip to France last month might have some validity, considering the lavish retirement packages bestowed upon the dismissed Service Chiefs.
Sowore further claimed that since assuming the presidency, Tinubu has consistently acted in the interest of consolidating his own power, often at the expense of ordinary Nigerians.
Alleged Favoritism and Political Motivations
According to Sowore, Tinubu’s policy decisions have predominantly favored his inner circle and political allies.
These decisions include removing fuel subsidies and defunding public education to appease foreign investors, floating the naira to satisfy currency speculators, raiding the offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to protect political friends, and granting unprecedented retirement benefits to the military, purportedly to keep them content.
Sowore’s Call for Change
Expressing his concerns, Sowore emphasized the need for a revolution and urged for attention to be given to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
He criticized what he perceived as Tinubu’s prioritization of personal and political interests over the welfare of the nation.
