In a dramatic turn of events, Alize van der Merwe, a 39-year-old woman, has been released after being kidnapped in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
Her release comes as a relief to her family and friends following a tense few days.
The Journey and Kidnapping
Van der Merwe was traveling along the N2 highway, making her way from East London to a resort in Port St Johns on the picturesque Wild Coast.
The last time her family heard from her was around 11:30 AM on Friday, September 20, when she indicated that she planned to stop, presumably at the Shell Ultra City in Mthatha.
However, the situation quickly escalated when her family received a ransom call that afternoon at approximately 3:13 PM.
The specifics of the ransom demand remain undisclosed.
Successful Rescue Operation
Fast forward to Thursday, September 26, and the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, commonly known as the ‘Hawks,’ announced that Van der Merwe and another woman, aged 34, had been rescued.
According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, both women were released around 12:15 PM and were dropped off near the Sulenkama police station in a white Toyota single-cab bakkie.
Police Intervention
Mhlakuvana revealed that the successful release of the two victims was a result of “pressure exerted by the police” on their captors.
Following their release, both women were reported to be traumatized and were immediately taken to the nearest hospital for medical care.
Ongoing Investigation
The second victim is believed to be a 34-year-old Chinese national who had been kidnapped on September 17 between Elliot and Barkley East.
As the investigation continues, the police are working to unravel the details surrounding both kidnappings and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Looking Ahead
The ordeal has raised concerns about safety in the region, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and police response.
As authorities delve deeper into the circumstances of these kidnappings, the hope is that such incidents will become increasingly rare.
