The sports community and family of former Memphis Tigers standout La’Andre Thomas are reeling after his untimely death at the age of 27.
Thomas was shot by police in Sandy Springs, Georgia, following an encounter that spiraled into a fatal incident.
The Incident That Led to Police Involvement
Authorities were called on Thursday after a 911 caller reported that a man had allegedly assaulted her while she walked her dog.
Responding officers located Thomas at a nearby bus stop.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), during the interaction, Thomas reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband.
One officer then fired, striking Thomas.
He was immediately transported to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.
Tragically, he was pronounced dead later that same day.
No officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
A Look Back at Thomas’ Football Career
La’Andre Thomas, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, made his mark on the field as a defensive back for the Memphis Tigers from 2017 to 2019.
Over his three seasons with the team, he played in 14 games and was part of the Tigers’ squad that reached the Cotton Bowl in 2019, leaving behind a legacy cherished by teammates and fans alike.
Investigation Underway
The GBI has confirmed that it will carry out an independent investigation into the shooting.
Once completed, the findings will be sent to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Thomas’ body will undergo an autopsy at the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office to provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding his death.
Family and Community Rally Around His Daughter
In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been launched to support Thomas’ young daughter, Laila.
The fundraising effort emphasizes the family’s heartbreak and the void left in Laila’s life.
“Laila’s world changed forever, and our family is left devastated, confused, and searching for answers,” the campaign reads.
“La’Andre was a father, a son, a brother, a friend, and someone deeply loved by his child.
His daughter now faces life without her father because of an incident that never should have happened.”

The family is advocating for transparency, access to body-cam footage, and a thorough investigation.
They are determined to ensure Laila’s rights are protected while facing mounting legal and administrative costs.
Donations are intended not only for funeral and memorial expenses but also for Laila’s long-term care, including counseling and therapeutic support to help her navigate the trauma.
