Another deadly accident has occurred in Volklip, Heralds Bay, near George, and police are investigating.
On Tuesday, February 8th, Conrad Maree (33) was killed when his bakkie slid over the cliff.
Maree did not show up for work on Tuesday morning, according to police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie, and the employer tracked down Maree’s bakkie at Volklip Heralds Bay George.
“George Police has opened an inquest docket for further investigation following the retrieval of the body of a 33-year old man.
The man was later identified as Conrad Maree. He stayed in George,” he said.
Pojie said preliminary information reveals that he drove the bakkie over the cliff.
Western Cape Government Health (WCGH) EMS spokesperson Deanna February earlier said a call for assistance came through at 8:40 on Tuesday.
February said the man was in the vehicle when it left the cliff.
When paramedics arrived at the scene at Voëlklip Cliff, Herolds Bay, they found that the man had suffered fatal injuries.
The body of the deceased was recovered by the WCGH Air Mercy Service (AMS) and other rescue officials.
February said in total, four Rescue vehicles were on scene, and Forensic Pathology Services officials were on the scene and followed the standard protocol while the body of the deceased was recovered.
The deaths of the two 75-year-old women at Voëlklip Cliff in February 2021 was one of many similar incidents that have taken place at the popular Western Cape fishing spot over the years.
In January 2021, a 34-year-old woman was travelling with her daughter, 2, and son, 8, when her vehicle also plunged off the cliff. The son managed to escape before the crash. The toddler’s body was found by a fisherman a month later.
In October 2019, Heidi Scheepers and her two children, Hugo and Cozette – aged 6 and 2 – died after their vehicle fell down the same cliff.
The bodies of Heidi and Hugo were recovered but not of Cozette.
