Pitso Mosimane finally addresses swirling rumours as Orlando Pirates legends push for his return to South African football

Rumours have been swirling lately, and the name on everyone’s lips in South African football circles is none other than Pitso Mosimane.

The celebrated coach has finally responded to the growing noise linking him to a potential role at Orlando Pirates—but it sounds like he’s in no rush to jump into anything just yet.

Legends Push for Pitso to Take the Reins at Pirates

The speculation started heating up after two former Pirates legends threw Pitso’s name into the ring as the ideal replacement for Jose Riveiro, the outgoing Spanish coach.

First up was Albert “Bashin” Mahlangu, who told Robert Marawa on 947 that Pitso ticks all the right boxes.

Not long after, Mpho Makola echoed the sentiment during a chat with FARPost, praising Pitso’s deep experience from his time leading Mamelodi Sundowns, Bafana Bafana, and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Pitso Breaks His Silence on the Rumours

Now, the man himself has spoken. Speaking to The Sowetan, Pitso addressed the speculation head-on—calmly, but firmly.

“I’ve seen it,” he said. “I know what’s being said, but no one’s spoken to me directly.

So how can we talk about something that hasn’t actually happened?”

In typical Pitso fashion, he didn’t slam the door shut either.

Instead, he pointed out that if something’s going to happen, it has to be the right time and the right project.

For now, though, he’s focused on building something even bigger than silverware—a lasting legacy.

Legacy First, Not Just Trophies

Pitso made it clear that he’s on a different mission right now.

Coaching might not be taking up his time in the traditional sense, but he’s busier than ever.

“I’m not sitting around,” he said. “I’m still on the pitch—just not during games.

I’m at schools, I’m helping other coaches, I’m involved in government projects.

I’m launching academies. It’s hectic. Every day I’m working.”

He’s not feeling any kind of coaching vacuum either.

“I don’t miss it the way you might think,” he explained. “I’m there, I’m hands-on. I haven’t stopped.”

Would Pitso Be a Good Fit for Pirates?

That’s the big question now—should Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza give Pitso a call? Many fans think it would be a no-brainer.

He’s one of the most respected coaches on the continent, with a trophy cabinet to back it up.

But from Pitso’s side, it sounds like it’s going to take more than a tempting offer to bring him back to the PSL sidelines.
