In a troubling case that has shocked many, a PhD researcher from the University of Surrey found himself in court after using a concealed camera to film women’s bottoms in Kingston-upon-Thames.

David Cloarec, 34, disguised the camera as a vape while he walked behind his unsuspecting victims.

This inappropriate behavior came to light when concerned members of the public noticed his actions and alerted the authorities.

During the proceedings at Wimbledon magistrates’ court, prosecutor Jack Williams detailed how Cloarec utilized the hidden camera to capture footage of women as he walked behind them.

He was soon confronted by bystanders, and despite attempting to flee the scene, he was apprehended.

Williams noted that there was a significant amount of footage collected during this incident, raising concerns about Cloarec’s motives.

Acknowledgment of Wrongdoing

Cloarec, who resides in Aldershot, Hampshire, expressed his shame over his actions during the court session.

He admitted feeling he had “betrayed [his] professors” and acknowledged the gravity of his behavior.

With an impressive academic background that includes degrees in social and human sciences, as well as law and economic management from the University of Bordeaux in France, this incident has cast a shadow over his credentials.

Legal Consequences

Ultimately, Cloarec was found guilty of attempting to operate equipment underneath another person’s clothing without consent, violating the Sexual Offences Act.

He apologized in court, claiming his actions were a moment of curiosity rather than premeditated.

District Judge David Bolton sentenced him to a 12-month community order, which includes 120 hours of community service.

Additionally, Cloarec must complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities, pay £650 in legal costs, a £114 victim surcharge, and register as a sex offender.
