Peter Obi Criticizes Nigerian Government for Failing to Pay Super Eagles Match Allowances and Undermining National Pride in Abuja

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has slammed the Nigerian government for its failure to pay the match allowances owed to the national football team, the Super Eagles.

In a passionate statement shared on his official Facebook page, Obi called the situation an embarrassment that not only tarnishes the nation’s image but also undermines the morale of the players.

A National Pride Undermined

Obi expressed deep concern over the ongoing situation, pointing out how the Super Eagles have been a beacon of hope and pride for Nigerians, both at home and abroad.

The team’s victories, which have brought joy to millions, are now marred by avoidable distractions caused by the government’s failure to meet its basic obligations to the players.

“The Super Eagles have been lifting our spirits with their victories, providing the unity and joy Nigerians desperately need.

Yet, these same players are being denied what is rightfully theirs—basic match allowances,” Obi wrote in his post.

He emphasized that, at a time when the country could use moments of collective pride and positivity, the ongoing issue of unpaid allowances was deeply troubling.

The Irony of Government Priorities

Obi raised a serious concern about the government’s priorities, pointing out the stark contrast between the resources allocated to political allies and grandiose government projects versus the lack of attention given to national representatives.

“A country that writes off trillions in debts and spends heavily on self-serving projects now struggles to meet its basic obligations to its national heroes.

This is not just a financial misstep; it’s a moral failure,” Obi remarked.

He questioned why the government could find funds for political interests or big-ticket projects but cannot fulfil its promises to athletes who bring pride and recognition to Nigeria on the world stage.

Damaging Nigeria’s Reputation

The failure to pay the Super Eagles their match bonuses, according to Obi, is not only an issue of fairness but also a matter of international reputation.

He warned that such neglect could have long-term effects on Nigeria’s image globally.

“These players deserve better. They deserve to focus on their game, especially with such a crucial quarter-final match ahead.

Instead, they are left to deal with unnecessary distractions because the government has failed to meet its obligations,” he continued.

Obi made it clear that this failure to honour agreements before the tournament was unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

A Call for Accountability and National Renewal

Peter Obi’s post ended with a call for national renewal, which he has championed throughout his political career.

He reiterated his belief that a “New Nigeria is possible,” where citizens can trust that their leaders will fulfill their basic promises and commitments.

The former governor stressed that this situation should serve as a wake-up call for the government to prioritize its obligations to the people—especially those who represent the country on the global stage.

“The Super Eagles do not deserve this embarrassment.

Nigeria must learn to meet its commitments, and it must do so now,” Obi concluded.
