Percy Tau, the South African international forward, and his club Al Ahly have reportedly decided to part ways, following ongoing tensions over a potential contract extension.
This move marks the end of Tau’s tenure with the Egyptian giants, after a season of impressive performances and heated negotiations.
Struggles with Contract Extension
Tau had a strong run at Al Ahly, particularly before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, finishing the 2022/23 season with 17 goal contributions in 42 matches.
His impressive form during that time generated interest from clubs overseas.
However, his performance seemed to plateau in the early part of the 2023/24 season, as he scored six goals but failed to register any assists.
This drop in form appears to have impacted ongoing contract talks.
Despite his solid contributions in the previous season, the club and Tau couldn’t reach an agreement on a contract extension, leaving the player’s future uncertain.
The Big Contract Offer That Never Was
At one point, Al Ahly was reportedly offering Tau a massive contract extension.

According to Egyptian reports, the three-year deal would have seen Tau earning around R23 million annually, with increases each year—starting with R1.9 million in the first year, R2.8 million in the second, and R3.8 million in the final year.
However, Al Ahly ultimately backtracked on that offer, opting instead to sell the player
There were rumors that the club might offer Tau a revised, less lucrative contract, but it seems those talks didn’t go far.
As a result, the Egyptian club decided it was time to part ways with the 29-year-old.
Chiefs on High Alert as Al Ahly Looks to Sell
This shift in Al Ahly’s stance triggered interest from other clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, who had been linked with a move for Tau.
Reports suggested that Al Ahly might be willing to sell the player for a good price, prompting Chiefs to stay on high alert for any developments.
Confirmation of the Contract Termination
Recent reports confirmed that Al Ahly and Percy Tau have mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract.
This decision, which comes just ahead of the January transfer window, was reportedly made in order for the club to free up space to sign another top foreign player.
SuperSport journalist Karabo Phasha shared the news on social media, stating, “Al Ahly & Percy Tau have agreed to mutually terminate his contract by mutual consent.
Ahly will pay Tau the remainder of his contract and add a waiver to it.”
