PDP Accuses INEC and APC of Dishonoring MKO Abiola’s Legacy on Democracy Day

…By Larry John for TDPel Media. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly dishonoring the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, whose legacy is celebrated by Nigerians on June 12 as Democracy Day.

Violation of Democracy in the 2023 General Elections:

In a statement released on Democracy Day, the PDP expressed its strong disapproval of observing the occasion under a regime it believes violated democracy through alleged election rigging in the 2023 general elections.

The party finds it distasteful and unacceptable to commemorate Democracy Day while such violations persist.

Unpardonable Assault on Democracy:

According to the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the actions of the APC and INEC during the 2023 general elections amount to an unpardonable assault and rape of democracy.

These actions, in the party’s view, reflect a disregard for the will of the people and undermine the very principles that Chief MKO Abiola fought and sacrificed his life for.

INEC’s Representation of Injustice and Electoral Fraud:

The PDP highlights that June 12 symbolizes the Nigerian people’s struggle against a corrupt, manipulative, and anti-democratic system, as well as against injustice, impunity, and electoral fraud.

The statement argues that INEC, under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, now embodies these negative qualities.

Erosion of Progress in Electoral Reforms:

The PDP laments that the significant progress and achievements made by previous PDP administrations in reforming the electoral system have been completely erased by INEC’s conduct during the 2023 general elections.

This erosion of progress is deeply concerning and undermines the faith of Nigerians in the electoral process.

Maintaining Hope for a Better Nation:

Despite the challenges, the PDP encourages Nigerians to remain optimistic and law-abiding in their pursuit of a better nation.

The party urges citizens not to despair but to continue to uphold the principles of democracy, which are essential for the overall well-being and progress of the Nigerian people.

Call to Leaders to Uphold Democratic Principles:

In conclusion, the PDP calls on leaders at all levels across the country to be guided by the essence of June 12 and to consistently adhere to the principles of democracy.

It emphasizes that it is in the best interest of the Nigerian people for leaders to uphold these principles, ensuring a just and democratic society.
