In a CAF Champions League preliminary round clash, Orlando Pirates emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against Djabal Club d’Iconi on a Saturday afternoon.
This victory places Orlando Pirates in a favorable position for the second leg of the tie.
First Half Opportunities
Throughout the first half, Orlando Pirates, also known as the Soweto Giants, had several opportunities to take the lead.
Eva Nga missed a chance to score ten minutes before halftime, and Deon Hotto had an opportunity but shot wide.
Despite these chances, the visitors were unable to find the back of the net, leaving them disappointed at halftime.
Strategic Substitutions
The second half began with Orlando Pirates still struggling to break through the opposing defense.
In an effort to change the course of the match, Pirates’ coach Riveiro made his first substitution in the 63rd minute.
Eva Nga was replaced by Zakhele Lepasa, who has already netted five goals this season, and Hotto was replaced by Katlego Otladisa in the attacking lineup.
Lepasa’s Impact
Zakhele Lepasa wasted no time in making his presence felt on the field.
However, his initial close-range attempt was thwarted by the opposing defense.
As the game approached its conclusion, with only three minutes remaining, Lepasa managed to score his sixth goal of the season.
This crucial goal secured the victory for the Soweto giants, breaking the deadlock that had seemed likely to end the match in a draw.
The Decisive Goal
Lepasa’s late goal not only secured the win but also established a narrow lead for the Soweto Giants going into the second leg of the tie.
With the second leg scheduled to take place at the Orlando Stadium next week on Friday, Orlando Pirates will aim to maintain their advantage and progress further in the CAF Champions League.
