In 1996, Mandy Allwood made headlines when she announced that she was pregnant with eight babies. Unfortunately, the joy and excitement were short-lived after Many who was dubbed Octomom, lost all of the little ones at 24 weeks pregnant. And now there is more sad news as she just passed away after a long battle with cancer.
‘Octomom’ Mandy Allwood dies at 56
Mandy Allwood was overjoyed when she discovered that she was pregnant with not one or two but eight little babies. As the news spread, Mandy and her unborn little ones made headlines and soon people started referring to her as “Octomom.”
Unfortunately, tragedy quickly struck for Mandy and her then-boyfriend Paul Hudson, after she went into premature labour when the babies were only 24 weeks old.
Daily Mail reports that Mandy was forced to give birth to the babies over three days and three nights. None of the children – named Kypros, Adam, Martyn, Cassius, Nelson, Donald, Kitali, and Layne – survived.
She quickly became an overnight sensation as thousands of people across the world mourned with her. She even met with Princess Diana and Oprah Winfrey.
Shortly afterward, Mandy fell into a deep depression following the children’s deaths and turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort. The publication reports that she never fully recovered from the loss causing her life to spiral out of control.
A downward spiral
In 2007, she lost custody of her three children who she mothered after the death of her octuplets. Her family also cut ties with her. She then got cancer and had been operated on. Unfortunately, cancer came back, her landlord shared with The Sun.
“She had been struggling with cancer for a while and had an operation before Christmas but told us recently that it had come back. I don’t know what sort of cancer it was.”
Mandy will be cremated on Friday 4 February with no mourners present after her family reportedly declined an invitation to attend her funeral service.
